The Biogeochemical-Argo program (BGC-Argo) is a new profiling-float-based, ocean wide, and distributed ocean monitoring program which is tightly linked to, and has benefited significantly from, the Argo program. The community has recommended for BGC-Argo to measure six additional properties in addition to pressure, temperature and salinity measured by Argo, to include oxygen, pH, nitrate, downwelling light, chlorophyll fluorescence and the optical backscattering coefficient. The purpose of this addition is to enable the monitoring of ocean biogeochemistry and health, and in particular, monitor major processes such as ocean deoxygenation, acidification and warming and their effect on phytoplankton, the main source of energy of marine ecosystems. Here we...

In the past two decades, the Argo Program has collected, processed, and distributed over two million vertical profiles of temperature and salinity from the upper two kilometers of the global ocean. A similar number of subsurface velocity observations near 1,000 dbar have also been collected. This paper recounts the history of the global Argo Program, from its aspiration arising out of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, to the development and implementation of its instrumentation and telecommunication systems, and the various technical problems encountered. We describe the Argo data system and its quality control procedures, and the gradual changes in the vertical resolution and spatial coverage of Argo data from 1999 to 2019. The accuracies of the...

Argo float observations of basin-scale deep convection in the Irminger sea during winter 2011-2012 ArchiMer
Piron, Anne; Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle; Caniaux, Guy.
Analysis of Argo data obtained during winter 2011–2012 revealed the presence over the Irminger Basin of an exceptionally large number of profiles (41) with mixed layer depths (MLD) exceeding 700 m, which was deep enough to reach the pool of the intermediate Labrador Sea Water located in the Irminger Sea. Four of these profiles exhibited an MLD of 1000 m, which was the maximum value observed for the winter in question. The Argo sampling in the Irminger Sea during that winter, which was 3 to 4 times greater than for the preceding winters, enabled the different phases of the mixed layer deepening down to 1000 m, together with their spatial extents, to be observed for the first time. Two intense convective periods occurred: in late January south of Cape...

The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE [http://www.godae.org]) has spanned a decade of rapid technological development. The ever-increasing volume and diversity of oceanographic data produced by in situ instruments, remote-sensing platforms, and computer simulations have driven the development of a number of innovative technologies that are essential for connecting scientists with the data that they need. This paper gives an overview of the technologies that have been developed and applied in the course of GODAE, which now provides users of oceanographic data with the capability to discover, evaluate, visualize, download, and analyze data from all over the world. The key to this capability is the ability to reduce the inherent complexity of...

CROSSROAD. Climatic ROle of Subpolar Slopes: a Regional Observational Array off NewfoundlanD ArchiMer
Desbruyeres, Damien; Mercier, Herle; Thierry, Virginie; Lherminier, Pascale; Gula, Jonathan; Cyr, F; Kieke, D; Holliday, P; Smeed, D.
An observational experimental setup will be proposed to investigate the dynamics and thermodynamics of the deep western boundary current in the “transition zone” of the North Atlantic, around Flemish Cap, Newfoundland. Located between the international RAPID and OSNAP mooring arrays, this region represents a unique choke point for most of the North Atlantic large-scale currents and water masses involved in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Horizontal export and latitudinal coherence, water mass transformation and vertical motions, as well as shelf-slope-interior exchanges will be studied with repeat hydrography, moorings, drifting and profiling floats, and gliders. Multidisciplinary approaches are likely, including biogeochemistry and...

“Deep-Arvor”: A new profiling float to extend the Argo observations down to 4000m depth. ArchiMer
Le Reste, Serge; Dutreuil, Vincent; Andre, Xavier; Thierry, Virginie; Renaut, Corentin; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Maze, Guillaume.
The international Argo program, consisting of a global array of more than 3000 free-drifting profiling floats, has now been monitoring the upper 2000 meters of the ocean for several years. One of its main proposed evolutions is to be able to reach the deeper ocean in order to better observe and understand the key role of the deep ocean in the climate system. For this purpose, Ifremer has designed the new “Deep-Arvor” profiling float: it extends the current operational depth down to 4000 meters, and measures temperature and salinity for up to 150 cycles with CTD pumping continuously and 200 cycles in spot sampling mode. High resolution profiles (up to 2000 points) can be transmitted and data are delivered in near real time according to Argo requirements....

Deep-Arvor floats (4000m) : first results and future plans ArchiMer
Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle; Maze, Guillaume; Le Reste, Serge; Dutreuil, Vincent; Andre, Xavier; Lenault, Yannick.
The Deep-Arvor float is an Argo float designed to achieve more than 150 profiles at 4000m depth. It is equipped with a SBE41CP CTD. Oxygen measurements are in option (4330 optode). Two 3500 dbar models were deployed in 2012 and 2013. Two 4000 m (4120 db) industrials prototypes were deployed in 2014. We expect to deploy twelve 4000 m floats in 2015 and 2016. Results at sea of the first 4 Deep-Arvor are presented.

Deep-Arvor: Technology & results from the first deployment ArchiMer
Le Reste, Serge; Thierry, Virginie; Dutreuil, Vincent; Andre, Xavier; Trautmann, Coralie.
Deep-Arvor has been designed to achieve more than 150 profiles from 4000 meters depth, with CTD continuously pumping and oxygen measurements. The first prototype of Deep-Arvor was deployed in August 2012. High resolution profiles are transmitted by the Iridium satellite system. Deep-Arvor maintains the self-ballasting feature of Provor/Arvor and the easy deployment of Arvor thanks to its light weight.

Deep-Arvor was designed by Ifremer to achieve more than 150 profiles from 4,000 meters depth, with CTD continuously pumping and oxygen measurements. After the validation of two first models at the sea, the industrialization has been entrusted to NKE. The first constructed prototypes of Deep-Arvor have been deployed successfully in May 2014. Thanks to its light weight, Deep-Arvor maintains the self-ballasting feature of Provor/Arvor and the easy deployment of Arvor. High resolution profiles are transmitted by the Iridium satellite system.

Delayed mode analysis of DEEP ARVOR floats ArchiMer
Cabanes, Cecile; Racape, Virginie; Thierry, Virginie.
Delayed Mode analysis was performed for deep Arvor floats. First, salinity and temperature profiles were compared to nearby historical CTD profiles. Real time QC flags were verified and modified if necessary. The OW method was  run to estimate a salinity offset or/and a salinity drift using historical CTD profiles as a reference database. Finally, if necessary, the corrections were applied and corrected files were sent to the Coriolis DAC.
